A General Assembly alternative. For the work that comes next.
Moonlabs is the operator-led AI Academy in Derby. We run three live companies — Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk — and we teach twelve students per cohort to ship a real AI product, sell it to a real customer, and raise on it. Three pillars: Coding, Commercials, Investment. Twelve weeks. £6,000.
Moonlabs is what we are. Two operators — James Freestone and Louis O’Connell-Bristow — who run Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk. We have hired GA graduates over the years and we know what the modern bootcamp playbook produced. The honest comparison on this page is the version we would give a candidate in a coffee chat.
The Academy is what we do. A twelve-week, in-person, twelve-student cohort in Derby. You build a real AI product. You sign a paid pilot on it. You write a deck and a financial model. You leave with a deployed system, a paying customer reference and a live investor pipeline. Coding, Commercials, Investment — the three pillars taught in equal weight every week.
Why this page exists. General Assembly trained a significant slice of the modern data, UX and software workforce, and we respect what it built. It is not the right shape for 2026 — GA tracks (UX, data, software, product) each focus on one technical discipline; the Academy is the inverse, three pillars taught simultaneously on top of AI-native engineering that GA’s tracks were designed before. You leave the Academy with a deployed AI product, a paying customer reference and a live investor pipeline — not a single-track CV pointed at a junior briefing. Deeper essay here.
Coding · AI-native, not single-track
GA’s data, UX and software tracks each focus on one technical discipline at 2018-era depth. The Academy puts Cursor, Claude Code and Codex at the centre, plus production retrieval, agents, evals, observability and deploy pipelines — the stack 2026 hiring managers actually ask for. A deployed AI product by week twelve.
Commercials · the bit a junior track skips
GA graduates a junior engineer / analyst / designer; pricing, sales and the discovery call sit outside the syllabus. The Academy makes them the centre of half the cohort. Five live discovery calls by week three. A paid pilot by week six — a different artefact entirely on the way out.
Investment · operator outcomes vs junior placements
GA’s strongest grads land good junior roles. The Academy’s strongest grads found companies that raise, or take senior-AI offers at AI-native employers (Anthropic, Cohere, ElevenLabs, Mistral, Wayve, Faculty AI, Sierra, Hebbia, Glean). Cap table, ten-slide deck, financial model. A live investor pipeline by demo day — or a senior-band offer, depending on the route you choose.
Common questions.
Is this an anti-GA page?
No. GA built things that worked for the decade it was built in, and many of the strongest data and design professionals we work with came up through it. This page exists because the bootcamp question in 2026 looks different from the one GA solved in 2014, and people search for it.
I want a fast track to a junior data role. Is GA still the right shape?
Honest answer: depends. If you want a recognisable bootcamp brand on your CV and a hireable junior CV in two-three months, GA may still serve you. If you want a deployed AI product, paying pilots, a deck, and a senior-band conversation on the table, the Academy is built for that.
How does the cost compare?
Tuition is £6,000 against typical GA UK / US programmes at £10,000-£15,000+, plus materially lower cost of living in Derby. Bursaries, scholarships, employer funding and apprenticeship routes accepted.
I am already mid-GA at a programme. Should I switch?
Probably not, unless something is clearly broken. Finish what you started; the Academy is a strong follow-on for graduates of classic bootcamps who want to add AI-native commercial fluency on top.
Where can I read the deeper comparison?
Moonlabs Academy vs jointakeoff vs YC Startup School is the comparison essay-length version. Best AI course UK is the wider field-mapping page.
More Academy entry points.
The Academy is one course with many doors. Each of these pages is a different entry point into the same twelve weeks.
Build it. Sell it. Raise on it. In twelve weeks.
Tell us where you are starting from and which GA track you considered. James and Louis read every application personally and reply inside the week.
