Moonlabs Academy · the jointakeoff alternative

A jointakeoff alternative. In the room.

Moonlabs is the operator-led AI Academy in Derby. We run three live companies — Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk — and we teach twelve students per cohort to ship a real AI product, sell it to a real customer, and raise on it. Three pillars: Coding, Commercials, Investment. Twelve weeks. £6,000.

Moonlabs is what we are. Two operators — James Freestone and Louis O’Connell-Bristow — who run Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk. We have hired engineers who started on jointakeoff and we know what the format produces. The honest comparison on this page is the version we would give a candidate in an interview.

The Academy is what we do. A twelve-week, in-person, twelve-student cohort in Derby. You build a real AI product. You sign a paid pilot on it. You write a deck and a financial model. You leave with a deployed system, a paying customer reference and a live investor pipeline. Coding, Commercials, Investment — the three pillars taught in equal weight every week.

Why this page exists. jointakeoff is genuinely strong at the online, asynchronous, large-cohort format — accessible AI training for a broad audience, real engineers we know got their start there. The Academy is deliberately the opposite shape: in person, in Derby, twelve students, two operators in the room. You leave the Academy with a deployed AI product, a paying customer reference, and a live investor pipeline — the artefacts an async video course structurally cannot produce. Deeper essay here.

Coding · operator-grade not video-grade

jointakeoff teaches the coding well at scale via recorded sessions. We teach it in the room, with the same operators running three live companies catching bugs at your shoulder. Production AI stack — Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, retrieval, agents, evals, deploy. A deployed AI product by week twelve — not a Notion page of completed video lessons.

Commercials · the half a video course cannot teach

You cannot run a real discovery call inside an async video. Five live buyer calls by week three, run with us in the room. Pricing pushed against real buyer reactions. A one-page pilot agreement signed for real money. A paid pilot by week six — the milestone an asynchronous course cannot structurally produce.

Investment · the founder option an async course skips

jointakeoff produces hireable AI engineers. The Academy produces the same plus a credible seed-round founder. Cap table from week two, ten-slide deck, financial model, term sheets walked line by line. Warm introductions to UK angels (Plural, Local Globe, Concrete VC, Pi Labs, EF, Forward Partners). A live investor pipeline by demo day — or a senior-AI-role offer, your call.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is jointakeoff bad?

No. jointakeoff is good at what it does. The honest reason to look elsewhere is that the format may not fit your situation — async self-paced study works for some students and not for others, and the cohort scale that makes jointakeoff affordable also limits the kind of feedback you can get.

Is Moonlabs more expensive?

Yes — materially. £6,000 against jointakeoff’s lower price points. The reason is that twelve weeks of two operators in a room with twelve students is a fundamentally different cost structure to a recorded, scalable course. You should think about it as a different product, not a more expensive one.

Can I do both?

Plenty of students do — jointakeoff first as a low-cost on-ramp, the Academy later as the operator-led finishing course. We would not steer you away from it; the two are complementary if your timeline allows.

I live nowhere near Derby. Should I just do jointakeoff?

Probably yes, unless you can credibly relocate or commute for twelve weeks. We do not run a remote version of the Academy, and we do not pretend to. More on the online-vs-in-person question.
