Moonlabs Academy · learn the OpenAI API

The OpenAI API. Past hello-world, into production.

Moonlabs is the operator-led AI Academy in Derby. We run three live companies — Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk — and we teach twelve students per cohort to ship a real AI product, sell it to a real customer, and raise on it. Three pillars: Coding, Commercials, Investment. Twelve weeks. £6,000.

Moonlabs is what we are. Two operators — James Freestone and Louis O’Connell-Bristow — who run Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk. The OpenAI API is a production dependency at all three businesses; the patterns on this page are the ones we use to keep the bill, the latency and the regressions inside the lines we promised our users.

The Academy is what we do. A twelve-week, in-person, twelve-student cohort in Derby. You build a real AI product. You sign a paid pilot on it. You write a deck and a financial model. You leave with a deployed system, a paying customer reference and a live investor pipeline. Coding, Commercials, Investment — the three pillars taught in equal weight every week.

Why this page exists. Most engineers’ first encounter with the OpenAI API is ‘curl a chat completion, parse the JSON, done’. That gets you to hello-world. Production OpenAI is a different discipline: the Responses API and its stateful conversation model, function-calling that retries without looping, JSON-schema validation, the Agents SDK when it earns its place, streaming the front end can consume, observability that explains what the model decided. You leave the Academy with an integration in production for paying users, gated behind evals you wrote yourself, and the muscle memory to handle a model release without breaking last week’s ship — or as the founder of a GPT-shaped product.

Coding · the OpenAI API at production fluency

Responses API for stateful conversations, function calling that does not loop, JSON-schema structured outputs, the Agents SDK and Assistants API where they earn their place, batch API for offline jobs, prompt caching, streaming, model selection by use case. Evals from week one and provider-portable architecture so the integration survives a leaderboard reshuffle. A deployed OpenAI-integrated product by week twelve.

Commercials · selling GPT-integrated products into SMBs

Every SMB on the planet wants “ChatGPT for our data”. Pricing the engagement, the discovery call, a one-page pilot agreement, the first paying customer. A paid pilot by week six — for many graduates, a productised “your-data-on-GPT” offer sold back into the network they already know.

Investment · raising on a GPT-backed product

OpenAI itself $500bn, Perplexity ($14bn on the GPT-backed search thesis), Harvey ($1.5bn), Sierra ($4.5bn), Cursor ($2.5bn), Cognition (Devin), Lovable ($200m+), Granola, Mem, Read AI, Magic — the GPT-built product fundraises are the densest category in venture. Cap table, ten-slide deck, financial model. A live investor pipeline by demo day.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I need experience with the OpenAI API?

No. We will get you fluent inside two weeks. The OpenAI SDKs are well-documented; the production patterns are what take twelve weeks to learn properly.

How is this different from learning the Anthropic API?

Same Academy, sister page framed for a different provider. The Anthropic API page covers Claude; this one covers GPT. Most production teams in 2026 run multi-provider, and the Academy teaches both.

Will I learn the Agents SDK / Assistants API?

Yes — the Agents SDK where it earns its place over framework-agnostic alternatives, and the Assistants API for the cases where its stateful model fits. We will teach you the judgement, not just the tooling.

Will I learn fine-tuning OpenAI models?

Lightly — fine-tuning frontier OpenAI models is rarely the right answer compared to prompting and retrieval, but where it earns its place we cover it. The fine-tuning page covers the discipline.

Is this an OpenAI-sponsored course?

No. We are independent. We teach the OpenAI API because most production AI teams in 2026 run on it — not because OpenAI asked us to.

More Academy entry points.

The Academy is one course with many doors. Each of these pages is a different entry point into the same twelve weeks.

Build it. Sell it. Raise on it. In twelve weeks.

Tell us what you would build with the OpenAI API and who would pay for it. James and Louis read every application personally and reply inside the week.
