How to become an AI engineer.
Moonlabs is the operator-led AI Academy in Derby. We run three live companies — Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk — and we teach twelve students per cohort to ship a real AI product, sell it to a real customer, and raise on it. Three pillars: Coding, Commercials, Investment. Twelve weeks. £6,000.
Moonlabs is what we are. Two operators — James Freestone and Louis O’Connell-Bristow — who run Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk, have raised £5m+, and ship AI engineering work ourselves every working day. We hire AI engineers, interview AI engineers, and know what the actual job looks like in 2026 because we do it.
The Academy is what we do. A twelve-week, in-person, twelve-student cohort in Derby. You build a real AI product. You sign a paid pilot on it. You write a deck and a financial model. You leave with a deployed system, a paying customer reference and a live investor pipeline. Coding, Commercials, Investment — the three pillars taught in equal weight every week.
Why this page exists. The job title “AI engineer” barely existed three years ago; it is now the fastest-growing engineering role in the UK and the path in is genuinely unclear. The internet will sell you a Coursera certificate, a PhD, a Kaggle ranking and a YouTube playlist as the answer. Most of those will not get you hired in 2026. The essay underneath this whole approach is here. You leave the Academy as a hireable AI engineer at senior bands — or as the founder of the product you would otherwise have applied to work on.
Coding · the AI engineer’s job, mapped
Cursor, Claude Code, Codex at production fluency. Retrieval, agents, eval suites, observability, prompt-injection defence, structured outputs, tool use, cost discipline. Provider-portable architecture across Anthropic, OpenAI and open-weight. A deployed AI product by week twelve — the portfolio piece recruiters at AI-native teams ask for before they look at your CV.
Commercials · the AI-engineer salary band
AI-native employers (Anthropic, Cohere, ElevenLabs, Mistral, Wayve, Faculty AI, Sierra, Hebbia, Glean, Decagon) pay senior AI engineers 3-4x conventional senior-eng rates — if you can show shipping evidence. Pricing your own work, negotiating offers, the discovery conversation that lands the role. A credible senior-AI offer or a paid pilot by week six.
Investment · the founder option, not just the job
A real Academy artefact is also a credible seed-round pitch. Cap table, ten-slide deck, financial model. Founders we know who started here: Cursor ($2.5bn), Lovable ($200m+), Granola, Replit Agent, ChatPRD, Cognition (Devin) — the founder shape investors are loudest about wanting in 2026. A live investor pipeline by demo day if you choose the founder route over the offer.
Common questions.
Do I need a degree to become an AI engineer?
No. Several of the strongest engineers we have hired or graduated do not have one. A degree is still useful — it signals patience and a baseline. But in 2026, a deployed product talks louder than a 2:1 in a related subject.
Do I need to know maths and machine learning theory?
Less than the internet suggests. Almost no useful AI engineering in 2026 trains models from scratch — the work is building applications on top of frontier APIs. You will need enough maths to read an eval and an ML paper, not enough to write one.
What programming languages should I learn?
Modern web stacks (Laravel + Blade, Next.js), Python where appropriate, SQL for serious work, and the AI-native tools — Cursor, Claude Code, Codex. The Academy teaches all of these in twelve weeks of real product building.
Should I do a masters degree in AI instead?
A masters teaches the underlying theory at depth. The Academy teaches you to engineer, ship and sell an AI product. Different artefacts. Many engineers do both at different points; pick the artefact your next move actually needs.
How long does it take to become hireable?
Most Academy graduates are hireable at senior bands inside the twelve weeks of the cohort, on the strength of the deployed product. The artefact is the part recruiters cannot ignore.
More Academy entry points.
The Academy is one course with many doors. Each of these pages is a different entry point into the same twelve weeks.
