How to validate an AI startup idea.
Moonlabs is the operator-led AI Academy in Derby. We run three live companies — Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk — and we teach twelve students per cohort to ship a real AI product, sell it to a real customer, and raise on it. Three pillars: Coding, Commercials, Investment. Twelve weeks. £6,000.
Moonlabs is what we are. Two operators — James Freestone and Louis O’Connell-Bristow — who have validated and killed dozens of wedges across Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk. Most of the ideas we tested in our own businesses never shipped — the validation discipline on this page is how we save ourselves quarters.
The Academy is what we do. A twelve-week, in-person, twelve-student cohort in Derby. You build a real AI product. You sign a paid pilot on it. You write a deck and a financial model. You leave with a deployed system, a paying customer reference and a live investor pipeline. Coding, Commercials, Investment — the three pillars taught in equal weight every week.
Why this page exists. The internet’s answer to AI startup validation is a survey, a landing page and a hundred email-list signups. None of that is validation. A landing-page signup costs nothing and proves almost nothing; a ‘great idea’ nod from a friend less. The only validation that counts in 2026 is a real buyer agreeing to pay you for the thing — before you have spent a quarter building it. You leave the Academy with a paid pilot or an honest kill decision — both beat six months in the dark.
Coding · the smallest shippable version, in days
AI tooling has collapsed the build cost of a real prototype to a fortnight, not a quarter. Cursor, Claude Code, Codex on real frameworks. A working product the buyer could plausibly use on Monday, not a slide deck about one. A shippable prototype by week two — the artefact validation calls need to be honest.
Commercials · five named buyers, money on the line
Five real discovery calls with named buyers by week three, run live with us in the room. Quote a real price you wrote down. Ask for a paid pilot. Listen carefully to the no’s. A paid pilot by week six — or an honest kill decision in time to reshape the wedge before the cohort ends.
Investment · validation is the slide that opens doors
Investors back products with evidence; the £500 pilot is the strongest pre-seed evidence there is. Many a16z, Plural, Local Globe, Concrete VC and EF investments at pre-seed stage cited a single paid pilot as the primary diligence anchor. Cap table from week two, ten-slide deck, financial model. A live investor pipeline by demo day — built on the validation, not on hope.
Common questions.
Is a landing page with sign-ups validation?
Almost never. Sign-ups cost nothing and prove almost nothing. The closest landing-page experiment that counts is one where a named buyer agrees to a paid pilot after a real conversation, with the landing page as supporting material. The conversation is what validates.
Do I need an idea before I apply?
Helpful but not required. We pressure-test the wedge in week one and reshape it as buyer conversations come in. If you do not have one yet, we will help you find one inside the first fortnight.
What if the validation comes back negative?
Then you have saved yourself six to twelve months. Many of the strongest careers we know are downstream of an idea someone killed honestly at week six. The Academy makes both outcomes valid.
Will I learn how to actually price a pilot?
Yes — pricing intuitions are introduced in week one, stress-tested through buyer conversations in week three, and revisited every fortnight after that. Pricing is one of the highest-leverage skills in the entire curriculum.
How is this different from running customer-discovery interviews myself?
You can do it yourself; many strong founders have. The Academy compresses the arc, adds the operator in the room when you fumble the first three calls, and surrounds the validation with the engineering and the commercial work needed to actually act on the answer.

The Academy is one course with many doors. Each of these pages is a different entry point into the same twelve weeks.
