Build a startup. In twelve weeks.
Moonlabs is the operator-led AI Academy in Derby. We run three live companies — Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk — and we teach twelve students per cohort to ship a real AI product, sell it to a real customer, and raise on it. Three pillars: Coding, Commercials, Investment. Twelve weeks. £6,000.
Moonlabs is what we are. Two operators — James Freestone and Louis O’Connell-Bristow — who have raised £5m+ across Homemove, home.co.uk and homedata.co.uk. We have done the twelve-weeks-to-real-company arc multiple times in our own businesses — the pricing calls, the term-sheet edits, the back-of-the-envelope financial models. The Academy is twelve weeks of putting you through that exact arc with us in the room.
The Academy is what we do. A twelve-week, in-person, twelve-student cohort in Derby. You build a real AI product. You sign a paid pilot on it. You write a deck and a financial model. You leave with a deployed system, a paying customer reference and a live investor pipeline. Coding, Commercials, Investment — the three pillars taught in equal weight every week.
Why this page exists. Most twelve-week startup courses teach the theory of starting a company; we compress the actual work into the same twelve weeks. The reason twelve weeks is enough now is the tooling — Cursor, Claude Code, Codex have collapsed the distance between idea and deployed product to the point that the bottleneck is the commercial work, not the code. By week six you have a paying pilot. By week twelve you have a real company, a deck, a model and a live investor pipeline. Some graduates raise; some hire; some join the Moonlabs portfolio as co-founders.
Coding · idea-to-deployed in weeks
Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, evals, agents, retrieval, deploy pipelines — the production AI stack we use to run three companies, on your project. The reason twelve weeks is enough now. A deployed product by week twelve on a real domain, with real users.
Commercials · the paid pilot, not the science project
Wedge selection in week one. The first five discovery calls by week three. Pricing, a one-page pilot agreement, the close. A paid pilot by week six — the milestone that makes everything else (the deck, the model, the raise) actually credible.
Investment · the round, not the wish-list
By demo day you have a curated list of fifty plausible investors, outreach already sent, term sheets walked through line by line, and the deck pre-rehearsed against the questions they actually ask. We make warm introductions where we have them. A live investor pipeline by demo day — some graduates close inside the next quarter.
Common questions.
Is this an accelerator?
Not in the YC sense — we do not invest at this stage. We do prepare you for the round, and graduates of the cohort have raised seed money successfully. Some Academy graduates go on to join the Moonlabs Incubator as co-founders, which is closer to the classic accelerator shape.
Do I need an idea before I apply?
Helpful but not required. We pressure-test the wedge in week one and reshape it as buyer conversations come in. If you do not have one yet, we will help you find one inside the first fortnight.
Can I do this as a co-founder pair?
Yes — we have run both shapes. Pairs apply together; solos apply alone and often find a partner inside the cohort.
How does this compare to YC Startup School?
YC Startup School is a free, online, asynchronous library of advice. The Moonlabs Academy is twelve weeks in person, with operators running real companies in the room with you every day. Different products. The honest comparison is written up at length here.
What if my startup is not AI?
Then we are probably not the right course for you in 2026. The Academy is built around AI-native engineering — if your startup does not use it, we are not the highest-leverage place to spend twelve weeks.
More Academy entry points.
The Academy is one course with many doors. Each of these pages is a different entry point into the same twelve weeks.
Build it. Sell it. Raise on it. In twelve weeks.
Tell us what you would build and who would pay for it. James and Louis read every application personally and reply inside the week.
